For both a room and a one or two persons apartment, a household effects insurance is included in the rent. For a mere € 1,20 your household effects are insured against damage caused by fire, water, burglary and theft. Your belongings in the communal areas are also insured.
We introduced this household effects insurance as a standard inclusion in the rent in 2001, because many of the occupants turned out not to be insured. It could lead to painful situations if damage does occur that involves substantial costs.
Own risk and premium
For each claim there is a € 70,- deductibility. In cases of damage to communal areas, there is a joint deductibility ( for three or more lodgers), which is limited to € 210,- for all certificate holders together. The monthly premium (which you pay via your service costs) is only € 1,20 per month. Your household effects are insured for up to € 9000,- for each rental contract, irrespective of the composition of the household. In case of theft however, the amount is restricted to € 2250,- for audio, video and computer systems.
New lodgers receive this household effects insurance as part of their rent. If you are not interested however, you can indicate this when you are signing the contract. Lodgers who would like to apply can do so by e-mail or letter. The insurance will be effective as from the first of the following month.
What are household effects?
Household effects include not only furniture, carpeting, clothing, jewellery and audio, video and computer systems, but also any personal belongings that are in your room, communal areas and/or storage space in the apartment/building. Damage done to belongings that are specially insured are not included (for example a special luggage insurance). Damage through theft without breaking and entering, and water damage due to fire-hoses used for anything but extinguishing a fire are not insured via this insurance.
