The SSH has an extremely fast internet connection, which is

installed in the big student complexes. Around 5000 lodgers are connected. This internet connection is included in the rent. The speed is the same in all the buildings: 100 Mbit in every room.

Network

The network is completely independent and has gigabit fibreglass connections. This network is linked to the UU (Solisnet), from which students (and others entitled to Surfnet) can access the Internet via Surfnet. Non-students use a commercial provider to access the internet.

The education institutes (UU and HU) want their target group to have exclusive use of these heavily subsidized provisions. Surfnet demands the same, so SSH is obliged to cooperate. This is achieved automatically via the login procedure, as the user's details are compared with the database of those registered for UU and HU.

Connection

You will have to make sure your PC has a good quality 10-100 auto-sensing network card (not a modem). You should use a utp-cable category 5 enhanced. Make sure you don't use an ISDN cable, because it will definitely not work!

Logging in

The login procedure is platform-independent; you only need a browser. Whether this browser runs under Windows, Linux or on a laptop, is of no importance.

You will receive the address (URL) from a internet page, on which you'll find a registration form that must be filled in (just once). You will need to fill in the necessary details to make a link between your computer and your details. After that, registration will generally not be necessary. There will be a check several times a year to see whether you are still registered with an institute for Higher Education. It is for management reasons that dynamic IP addresses are used.

Webspace, outgoing mailserver and news server? Ask your helpdesk

We offer no services whatsoever on Internet. In a few complexes, the internet commission does do so. You can contact your internet commission or helpdesk to find out what possibilities there are, plus the terms and conditions.
Are you a Short Stay guest? Here you will find more information about internet in your accomodation.

Every Tuesday morning between 5 and 7 am there's maintenance on the network. You can experience some (short) interruptions in the signal.

Trouble shooting

You really don’t have to be a whiz kid to use internet, but you do have to take the right steps. You will be able to solve the majority of the problems yourself.

This procedure will help you to find out why the internet connection is not working.

If these measures have no effect, you can send an e-mail to the helpdesk of your  complex. Don't forget to state your name, address and the outlet number that is on the casing of your internet connection on the wall. They will then check whether there is a problem with the signal.

Abuse

Offering illegal software and hacking of computer connections both inside and outside the network is forbidden. Making illegal software available by copying and/or publicizing is an illegal act with respect to Copyright. Hacking computers is also forbidden by law. If we find that you have intentionally abused the SSH-network, the following measures will be taken:

  • You will be disconnected from the network. Depending on the gravity and scope of the abuse, disconnection may vary from a week to a permanent severance.
  • If there is a question of abuse as specified in the general users conditions, you will not be re-connected until you have paid the sum of € 200,- for re-connection charges
  • You will be held liable for all costs resulting from reprehensible behaviour on the SSH-network. This will include all costs incurred for legal aid in both civil and criminal legal procedures

Cut off. What now?

Each complex has its own 'abuse group' keeping an eye on the network. An 'abuse group' is formed by the occupants of the complex involved. If they determine that you have (un)intentionally abused the network, they will first disconnect you and then put you in quarantine. This means it will not be possible for you to use the internet.

The different 'abuse groups' can be reached via e-mail:
