If your income is low in proportion to the rent, you may be eligible for a rent allowance. The Tax Services give you a certain sum as compensation for your living costs. Those living in independent units can apply for  Rent Allowance if their net rent is within the limits laid down by the Ministry of  VROM ,( The  Ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment.)

Living in single rooms  

Tenants in single rooms can only apply for Rent Allowance if they live in a "designated building"  and the net rent ( basic rent plus a few service costs) is higher than € 201,37.This means that those tenants living in a room in the following complexes : IBB, Tuindorp, Warande, and also those in City-centre Buildings that were acquired after July 1st 1997 are not eligible for Rent Allowance.
