Many people in Utrecht offer rooms for rent in their family home. When you have registered, you are automatically eligible for mediation for a room in a private student's digs, or in a private family home.
Where will I find rooms in family homes?
They are to be found in the 'Currently AvailableŽlist. Each advertisement states the owner, and publication period of the advertisement, thus indicating whether there is a question of a private lessor or not.
How does 'Responding' work?
If you have responded to a room in a private home, more information will follow by e-mail. We generally send address and phone number of the lessor to a maximum of four candidates who satisfy requirements.
In the case of rooms in Student Hostels, the tenants themselves organize a "Present Yourself" evening and are sent a maximum of ten candidates.
Found a room?
If you are going to rent a room in a family home, you can come to the necessary agreements with the landlord or landlady yourself. We will send the lessors a standard Rental Contract. You are entitled to ask about this, so don't hesitate to do so. In fact we advise you to make sure to have the agreed terms and conditions in writing, which makes the contract official and binding. Some people prefer to make an oral agreement, which is also binding, but make sure to get a receipt of rent paid - a bank or giro statement will suffice- so that you can prove that you are renting the room in question. This will ensure that, just like any other tenant, you will have tenancy rights such as rent protection and control. If the room you are renting is in a private home, Rent Protection will not become active until after the first nine months. There is however a three month period for giving notice to quit.
